    Establishment

The Addis Ababa City Court has a long history of judicial proceedings in Ethiopia, and although it was traditionally conducted before elders or governors, with the help of traditional ceremonies, since the 1930s it has assumed the role of legal interpreters in the modern state structure, led by government-appointed leaders and judges.

    1990th

Addis Ababa City Court, when it started providing judicial services as the city's 3rd government body (law interpreter) by Decree No. 1/1990, started working at the Central Level 1 Court of Appeal and the First Instance Court at the First Instance Court. Currently, it is providing judicial services by organizing the Central Level 1 Court of Appeal and 11 First Instance Courts in 11 sub-cities. This is considered to ensure accessibility by ensuring that the city's residents have a court nearby.
In terms of judges and staff, when the court started providing judicial services, there were 6 First Instance Court judges and 6 Appeal Court judges, totaling 12 judges, and currently it has 18 Appeal Court judges and 88 First Instance Court judges, totaling 108 judges.

Among the judges serving since 2014, 97 have a bachelor's degree in law and 11 have a second degree in law. This indicates that the service is provided by judges who have completed their education and have worked in the legal profession for a minimum of 5 years and a maximum of 20 years. This shows that the experience, educational preparation and capacity of the judges of the Addis Ababa City Court are almost the same as the experience, educational preparation and capacity of the judges of the regional and federal courts.
Regarding support staff, one year after the court began its work, there were a total of 83 staff at the center, namely the Court of Appeal and the Court of First Instance. Currently, approximately 500 staff are working, despite the approved number of staff of 896 in the structural study. Considering the flow of records, it has been possible to create a capacity to handle more than 150,000 (one hundred and fifty thousand) records per year.
